The annual Thanksgiving morning battle between the Torrington and Watertown football teams has produced plenty of heroics and physical games in its 45-year history.
The series is tied 22-22-1, thanks to three straight wins by the Red Raiders.
The Torrington win streak began with a thriller in 2008 at the Robert H. Frost Sports Complex at Torrington High School. The Raiders trailed the Indians 13-6 with 3:18 remaining in the game, but junior quarterback Chris Deberry led the team 80 yards. His 13-yard touchdown pass to Darrick Williams made it 13-12 with no time left on the clock. Instead of going for the extra point, first-year head coach Dan Dunaj elected to go for two. Deberry rolled to his left and found the end zone for a thrilling 14-13 victory.
Given the close games that have occurred throughout the years, it cant be much of surprise that the first matchup between these two rivals, in 1966, ended in an 8-8 tie.
My brother Jim played in that, Torrington assistant coach and longtime trainer Mike lsquo;Doc McKenna said during practice last Tuesday.
In that game, Torringtons Mike Amminato had a shoe-top tackle of Watertowns Chris Burke for the game-tying safety late in the third quarter.
McKenna recalled his senior year game, a 16-15 win in 1972. The year before, a key fumble doomed the Raiders in a loss.
Theres been some good football players that have played in it, McKenna said of the rivalry.
In 1973 and 1974, Torrington topped Watertown by identical 7-6 scores, thanks to an extra point by Dan Jacobs in both contests.
In 1981, little-used senior place kicker Mike McCarthy made a 17-yard field goal with 17 seconds left to give the Raiders an 18-15 win over the Indians. Continued…

Nine teams composed of members from the business and media communities in Quinte competed in nine offbeat physical games that were featured at the Minute To Win It Corporate Challenge in support of United Way of Quinte, at the Belleville YMCA.
With so many great games available on Android and iPhone smart phones and Angry Birds available on all it would seem our portable gaming jones would be satisfied.
Not so fast, says Sony. On Feb. 22, 2012, the companys latest portable gaming gadget, the Vita, will go on sale for $250 for the Wi-Fi only model and $300 for a Wi-Fi plus 3G version.
I got a chance to fiddle with Vita earlier this week. Im no gamer Im too OCD to start, especially since I already play Scrabble waaaaaay too much (and dont want to turn into Alec Baldwin) but I do know a sophisticated piece of digital machinery and the most advanced portable gaming gadget ever when I see it. And I saw it.
Heres everything you need to know about the Sony Vita.
Simple specs
Youll notice two obvious attributes on Vita its bright 5-inch, 960 x 576 pixel touch screen and, even more impressive for gamers, dual joysticks, a first for a portable game device.
What you wont see but feel is Vitas rear, which also is touch-sensitive for additional game control. Like many of Vitas new features (described in more depth below), games have to be specially designed to take advantage of this rear touch surface.
As noted, Im no gamer so I dont know why you need a touch screen on both front and rear and two joysticks Im not even sure how you can physically coordinate the manipulation all four of these plus all the buttons in the heat of shooting the alien action, but Im sure you hard core gamers out there likely can think of a multitude of multi-input scenarios.
Behind Vitas visible controls are a quad core processor (most bleeding-edge smart phones offer just dual core engines) to enable more sophisticated graphics and gaming performance, a magnetometer (a compass to you and me), an accelerometer and a gyroscope, just like a smart phone, all so action on the screen can react to you simply moving Vita around.
Like on a smart phone, youll be able to watch movies, view photos, play music, map yourself via GPS and surf the Web on a full Web browser on Vita.
Vita has slots for two memory cards, both proprietary: the Vita Game Card, around the size of a standard SD card, on which physical games will be sold in stores, and something called removable media (clever name, eh?), a micro SD-like card on which to store downloaded games, along with your music, photos, movies, and other media.
There is no user storage memory on the Vita. Removable cards will be available in 4, 8, 16 and 32 GB capacities. Prices on these memory cards havent been set yet.
Vitas special features
Sony has assembled something beyond a collection of specs and silicon, imbuing Vita with some fancy features to take advantage both of the likely presence of a PlayStation 3 (PS3) in your home and the cloud.
Cross Play and Cross Save, for instance, lets you play a game on PS3, save your place in the cloud, download the saved version to Vita and continue playing, then back to PS3 again.
Thats the good news. The bad news is, Cross Play and Cross save works only on games designed for it. Worse, you have to buy both the PS3 and the Vita version of the game, which I think is absurd. Sony is thinking of bundling both versions together, which only slightly lowers the absurdity level.
Remote Connect does just what it sounds like via Wi-Fi, Vita can communicate with your home PS3 from wherever you are in the world to play games or movies stored there.
At home, you can use Vita as a PS3 controller using Bluetooth. On some PS3 games played on your big screen HDTV, youll be able to set strategy on the Vita screen, away from the prying eyes of your opponents.
In Party mode, you can text or chat with up to eight fellow Vita players even if everyone is playing a different game, a portable playing first, according to Sony. For chatting, at least half the players have to be connected via Wi-Fi.
And, most impressively, if you opt into Near, your Vita will be able to see other Vita Wi-Fi/3G-connected players who have opted into Near and who are playing the same game you are over several kilometers. You can then invite them to play against you. If youre bothered by all the social gaming activity, you can turn Near to play alone.
Part of Near is a new kind of virtual geocaching. You can leave virtual objects from particular games in real-life places a park, a store, a street corner, whatever for other gamers to treasure hunt. When the hunters get near the objects physical hiding place, it appears on their screen within the context of the game.
As you can see, theres a lot Vita can do that your Android or iPhone cant at least right now.
Vitas games
No prices have been set the games that will be available at or soon after Vitas launch (15 at least, likely more). These Vita games will include:
- WipEout 2048, a high velocity anti-gravity racing game.
- MLB 12: The Show, startlingly life-like major league baseball action.
- Uncharted: Golden Abyss, which follows the cinematic exploring adventures of someone called Nathan Drake.
- Sound Shapes, a musical game.
- LittleBigPlanet, starring Sackboy (whoever he is).
- ModNation Racers, some sort of weird racing game.
- Ruin, a social action fantasy game.
- Reality Fighters, an augmented reality fighting game in which the Vita camera can capture the gamers face to be morphed onto the game fighters, one aspect of Vitas face-tracking camera capability.
- Little Deviants, a cartoon adventure game.
- Gravity Rush, a colorful third-person adventure in which apparently the laws of gravity are more like suggestions.
- Hot Shots Golf World Invitational, which Im guessing is a golf game.
- Super Stardust Delta, the latest installment in the popular (so Im told) asteroid blasting adventure.
- Hustle Kings, a virtual pool (as in cue sticks and cue balls, not swimming) game.
- Escape Plan, in which you guide the hapless Lil and Laarg through labyrinths filled with puzzles and traps. What would they do without you?
- Resistance: Burning Skies, which is described as taking place the night before Resistance 2, filling in the lost yearshellip;of the day the Chimera came to NYC. Theres my argument restrict immigration.
- Unit 13, a military shooter with 36 missions; me, I would have chosen a different identifier if I was going into life-threatening situations.
And thats most of what space allows me to tell you about Sonys Vita.
Harbaugh Bowl to cap off Thanksgiving night.
Perfect.
Sink into your uncles couch with a totally stuffed stomach and watch one of the most physical games of the season.
The Ravens have seemed to play up to their competition and down to inferior opponents.
So that means theyll be ready to play against the 9-1 49ers, right?
At home, the Ravens are a much more inspired group, but when comparing the aspects of each team I have to give a slight edge to San Fran.
They should be able to limit Ray Rice and weve seen what happens when the Ravens runner is held in check.
The only way Baltimore wins this game is if Joe Flacco finds Torrey Smith on a few deep balls to keep the 49ers defense honest.
In the end, San Francisco makes a few more plays on offense and wins by a field goal.
Too much Frank Gore.
49ers 17 Ravens 14
LAST TIME OUT: Langston Galloway scored a career-high 30 points to lead Saint Josephs to a 75-68 win over Boston University. Galloway shot 9-for-14 from the field, while making a career-best 6-of-8 three-point field goals. His last one came with 2:11 to play after BU had closed to within 66-61. Junior Carl Jones went over the 1,000-point mark for his career when he hit a jumper with :02 to go in the first half. He became the 48th Hawk to reach the milestone and just the 17th to do so in his junior season. Jones finished with 13 in the game to give him 1,0007 in his career. Galloway scored nine of the Hawks first 16 points as he paced SJU to an early 16-12 edge. After the teams exchanged leads for the rest of the half, the Hawks went on a 10-0 run in the final 3:45 of the half, capped off by Jones milestone basket, to take a 40-28 lead at the intermission. Saint Josephs shot 53.8 percent in the first half, while hitting 6-of-11 three-pointers, with Galloway making all three of his attempts. The Hawks stretched their lead to 14 (46-32) early in the second half, but saw the Terriers use a 10-3 run to close to 49-42. SJU built it back to double digits and took its biggest lead of the game, 64-49, on a layup by Chris Wilson. BU answered back with a 12-2 spurt and came within 66-61 before Galloway hit the three that gave the Hawks a 69-61 cushion. Saint Josephs would close out the game going 6-for-11 from the foul line, but it was still enough to preserve the win.
HOME SWEET HOME: The current five-game homestand marks only the second time in history that SJUhas played five in a row on campus. The last time was in February 1990 (10th thru 21st) and the Hawks posted a 2-3 record. Saint Josephs is also currently in the midst of a stretch of seven of eight games at home, which is the first time in school history this has occurred.
DEJAVU: Last season the Hawks faced Boston University and Creighton in back-to-back games, but it was in reverse order. SJUtraveled to Creighton on Dec. 11 and then to Boston on Dec. 21, losing both games. Saint Josephs defeated BU on Wednesday, 75-68.
FACE THE NATION: CJ Aiken is the nations leader in blocked shots (as of Dec. 5) with his average of 5.0 per game. The Hawks rank third as a team in the NCAA Statistics, averaging 8.6 blocks per game, behind Kentucky(10.9) and Connecticut (9.0).
REACHING THE MARK:Carl Jones went over the 1,000-point mark for his career when he hit a jumper with :02 to go in the half. He becomes the 48th Hawk to reach the milestone and just the 17th to do so in his junior season. Jones finished with 13 in the game to give him 1,0007 in his career. The last third-year player to reach the plateau was Ahmad Nivins in 2007-08.
LANGSTONS LINE: Langston Galloway had a career-best night in the win overBU, scoring 30 points. He tied his career-high with nine field goals made and six three-pointers made, while going 6-for-7 from the foul line. Coach PhilMartelli had been in Galloways ear after the loss to American, encouraging him to be more creative and mix up his shot selection. The sophomore followed the instructions and got to the foul line seven times after taking no free throws at American.
BLOCK PARTY: The Hawks put on a show against Drexel, registering a school-record 16 blocked shots. CJ Aiken tied his career-high with nine, including seven in the second half. The previous record was 12 against Cleveland State on December 2, 1987, when the Hawks all-time leader Rodney Blake had all 12 by himself. Saint Josephs is now averaging 8.3 blocks per game, which ranks third in the nation. Aiken is climbing the Hawks career list as he already has 162, which ranks him fifth all-time. The school record is 419 by Blake.
MORE ON CJ:Phil Martelli sees the difference in CJ Aikens game this year: I like that CJ is enjoying himself. I watched him from the ninth grade on and at times, it was a chore for him to play. Now he enjoys it. And what younger kids watching should realize is that he never shows out.He doesnt react on an alley-oop or a block. Hes a beautiful kid and Im delighted that hes having such a good start to the season and Ithink theres more there. He can do more.
DONT GO THERE: TheHawks are proving to have a strong inside presence on defense with shot-blocking expert CJ Aiken joined by Ronald Roberts and Halil Kanacevic. Aiken has a team-high 45 blocks, but Kanacevic has 12 and Roberts has posted seven. Phil Martelli credits the preseason strength program as getting Hawks ready for physical games such as the Drexel contest. Our strength coach Brian Bingaman got the guys ready for these kind of games in August and September. So that were not little boys with little bodies against big, strong guys. The athleticism that Ron and CJ have and the toughness of Halil – Ill take this frontcourt. I like what they bring, said Martelli.
ANOTHER CHALLENGE: The Hawks are also facing two of the nations top scorers in back-to-back games. The nations third leading scorer, Darryl Partin of BU, scored his average (24), but Langston Galloway forced him into 6-for-18 shooting. Creighton enters todays game with Doug McDermott average 23.7 points as the fourth leading scorer in the nation.
OFF THE MARK:A glaring deficiency in the loss to American was the Hawks shooting just 46.7% (7-for-15) from the foul line. It was the lowest free throw percentage in a game for the Hawks since a 28.6 percent effort (2-for-7) against Villanova last season. It improved in the Boston University win to 73.7 percent although the Hawks made just 4-of-9 in the final minute of play.
HAWKS VS. THE POLLS: Saint Josephs last victories over Top 25 teams came in 2007-08 when it defeated Xavier twice in a span of two weeks. The Hawks topped #8 Xavier, 71-66, on March 6, 2008, in the final game at Alumni Memorial Fieldhous and then beat the 12th-ranked Musketeers on March 14, 2008 in the A-10 Semifinals. Creighton is the first-ranked team the Hawks will face this year.
SOMETHING DIFFERENT: Looming for the Hawks after final exams is a date with rival Villanova. What makes the game even more special this year is that it will be held on SJUs campus for the first time in the history of the series. The contest is slated for Saturday, December 19 at 8 pm, with the telecast on CBSSports Network.

Family holidays can be stressful for families that have just experienced change, such as divorce, blending of a family or new siblings. Often the hurt feelings come up right in the middle or just after a family event like Thanksgiving or Christmas, so its important to be aware and to keep the lines of communication open between you and your child.
Over-abundant displays of affection or physical aggression are indicators that your tactile child is experiencing stress. Redirect any aggressive behavior with physical games, like soccer and basketball. Whilst playing, use the breaks and time-outs to talk about what may be bothering them.
If the family has expanded recently, try to leave some time for one-on-one physical play. This reassures your child that they still have your attention, and also gives them an opportunity to talk about things without worrying about what the new family members might say or think. Stick to the usual routines; now is not the time to be changing loved traditions. Even simple rituals like a cuddle before bed, shooting hoops before dinner, or pizza on Sundays will make your child feel secure that not all things are changing.
The typical coping mechanism for the auditory child is to control the sound around them. If you find your child insisting on wearing their headphones, or tussling over the television remote, or more given to verbal rebuttals, this is an indicator that they are becoming overwhelmed.
The more tension an auditory person feels, the more sensitive to sound they become. This includes how they are spoken to, so it important to be extra careful with tone. If things seem to be spiraling, take them away to a quieter part of the house, to do a quiet activity together. Allow them to talk through issues as much as they want, which at times may feel repetitive, but these conversations are necessary for them to organize their thoughts and feelings. You will find that how they feel about an issue at the beginning of the conversation can be greatly improved by the end.
When your visual child becomes bossy and demanding, rest assured it means they are feeling anxious. Exerting control by ordering everybody about, and insisting that things are placed in a particular order, is their way of controlling their environment. Every child needs boundaries with behavior, but in these instances its best to take your visual child away from the group to talk about whats upsetting them. Visual children are very sensitive to being corrected in public which can embarrass them and make matters worse so try to do this privately. More than the other senses, this child does well on public praise, so give the child a visual job to do such as setting the table or drawing a holiday picture, and build their self-esteem by having others admire it.
Taste and smell children, sensitive at the best of times, will be very aware of everyones moods and feelings. This can be a blessing, but also a curse — rarely does the blending of a new family for the holidays go perfectly. This will result in clinginess, tears or sulky behavior on the part of your taste and smell child. Its important to understand the roller coaster of their emotions. A taste and smell child may be crying and needy, followed by a bout of clinging to your leg, then suddenly demand to rejoin the group and jump in. Try not to feel frustrated by this and if it takes your taste and smell child longer than expected to bond with their new family members or if they keep talking about the family member/parent who isnt there, remember that this is just them feeling divided in loyalties between parents and step-parents.
Family events like Thanksgiving often come with more pressures when blending a new family or introducing a new partner to your children. Be aware of their telltale sensory signs of stress, and help them through the transition with patience and understanding.

Despite the fact his team has shot 50 percent or less from the
line in its last five contests, Rock Island girls coach Thad Hoover
is non-plussed.
“Hard physical games when you’re huffing and puffing it’s
different than shooting them in practice,” Hoover said. “They’re
going to go in at some point. We’re three months away from the part
of the season when we want to be playing our best ball.”
Over the course of that five game stretch the Rocks are
27-for-60, while going 5-0.
Shiltz: Panthers need to be more than one-person
team: Don’t get UT girls coach Justin Shiltz wrong, he
loves what senior Mikayla Fallon brings to his team. He just wishes
sometimes she wouldn’t have to do so much.
“I’ve said this a million times, we feed off her from a positive
standpoint and from a negative one,” Shiltz said. “Whether she gets
off to a good start or not, we’ve got to play better. Too many
times we rely on her to bail us out.”
The Panthers struggled to score in the first half in their
conference matchup at Rocky, netting only 11 points in the opening
two quarters. But as Fallon warmed up in the second half, so did UT
as she scored 14 of the team’s 18 points.
Western Big Six girls game to be played in Panther
Den: Tonight’s Western Big Six sophomore and varsity games
between Rock Island Alleman and United Township will be played in
the Panther Den as opposed the girls gym where the games are
typically played.
Fans should enter the hallways from the main parking lot on the
west side of the school. These doors will open at 4:45 pm. No
admittance from the main doors located off of the Avenue of the
Cities will be allowed.
Fotos off to good start: United Township coach
Lambros Fotos is off to a 6-3 start in his first year at the helm
of his alma mater. The Panthers have beaten Morton, Geneseo,
Sterling, Plainfield South, Normal West, and Pekin while falling to
North Scott, Clinton and Normal Community.
Keppy misses meet, will return this
weekend: Riverdale wrestler Mitch Keppy missed action last
weekend after he fell ill with a bout of flu. Rams coach Lance
Sherman said his senior 285-pounder is fine and will compete in the
Riverdale invitational Saturday.
McGhee ranked No. 18: Rock Island’s BJ McGhee
was ranked No. 18 nationally by Intermat at 120 pounds. McGhee
finished third at the Illinois state tournament at 103 pounds last
season.
Venegas picks up a four-spot: United Township
senior Gilbert Venegas picked up four wins on Saturday, two by pin.
Venegas, wrestling at 152 pounds led the Panthers to a 3-1 record
on the day.
NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan’s football team has been down this path before. Three games in 10 days is a difficult stretch in any sport, but especially so in a physically demanding sport such as football.
The fifth-seeded Rams play No. 1 Windsor in the semifinals of the Class L playoffs Saturday at 2 pm in East Haven. After its Thanksgiving win over Darien, the Rams had four days to prepare for No. 4 New London, where they squeaked out a 27-26 win.
Now comes Windsor (11-0), which beat Notre Dame of West Haven, 14-7, in the semifinals. One huge difference is Windsor had 11 days off before its first playoff game. Many teams in the northern section of the state do not play on Thanksgiving.
“We’ve been through this before, and you just have to be very careful,” New Canaan coach Lou Marinelli said. “It’s not soccer. You have to be able to manage the kids. We had two tough, physical games and now we have an equally physical team. We’re just glad to be here and hopefully we have the chance to compete for a state championship.”
The Rams faced a similar road last year, and they won all three games. That propelled them to the state championship game, where they fell to Masuk, 50-20. The Rams could get a rematch if they win on Saturday and No. 3 Masuk gets past No. 2 Daniel Hand.
The Rams’ explosive offensewill clash with Windsors tough defense, which surrendered just 86 points all season. Bristol Central lost this season to Windsor, 47-20, and no other team has scored more than 14 points.
The Rams counter with an offense led by quarterback Matt Milano, who has thrown 31 touchdowns. His top targets include Patrick Newton (49 receptions, nine touchdowns), Peter Kraus (39 receptions, 10 touchdowns) and Connor Kilbane (51 catches, seven touchdowns). Kevin McDonough (428 yards, 6.9 yards per carry) leads the rushing attack.
The Rams’ defense is led by Dylan Leeming, who stopped a two-point conversion attempt by New London to preserve Tuesday’s victory. McDonough (94 tackles) is also one of the Rams’ defensive stalwarts. Newton, Casey Oullette and Jared Meichner each have three interceptions.
Windsor’s attack is led by quarterback Robert Fleeting (29 touchdowns) and running back Kymm Gordon, who has rushed for 733 yards and four touchdowns.
New Canaan is seeking its 19th state championship. The Rams have won six titles since 2001, including four straight from 2006-2009.
The best possible way to beat Barcelona – Real Madrid’s point of view (Part 2)
Jose Mourinho played the Portuguese centre back as a holding midfielder. How did it help Madrid? Pepe would rush on towards any Barcelona player who had the ball in Madrid’s area. Pepe would rush towards Xavi Hernandez so he passes the ball back while he
would barge into Lionel Messi so he cannot get past the Madrid defence with his usual dribbling skills.
This way Madrid were able to hold down Barcelona in return leg of the Spanish La Liga. It was for the first time that Josep Guardiola struggled to win against Madrid. Barcelona found it really hard to get past the Madrid defence line as Pepe was standing
guard right in front of them.
Pepe acted like a wall right in front of Madrid’s back four. He was more like a fifth defender who was playing more like a holding midfielder. His job was not to go forward but to disrupt play and intercept everything possible. Moreover, he also acted like
a distributor of the ball with two more centre midfielders playing alongside him – either Lassana Diarra and Xabi Alonso or Sami Khedira and Xabi Alonso.
This trick worked for Jose Mourinho because he was playing with three players in the midfield who could all tackle the ball well.
How did Mourinho win the Copa Del Rey? The Portuguese coach played a 4-3-3 formation with Cristiano Ronaldo being the centre forward. Angel Di Maria and Ozil were played on the flanks while three midfielders played deep and Madrid tried to play counter attacking
tactics.
There are only a few things which trouble Barcelona even on their best nights. Mourinho did his homework and he found Barcelona’s weaknesses.
Mourinho saw how Barcelona players are not tall. Therefore, the Portuguese coach played a formation in which the wingers were sharp and quick. They got past their marker, crossed the ball in, in order to find the back of the net through a header. The trick
actually worked when Angel Di Maria crossed the ball in during extra time and Ronaldo was able to score with a header.
What else did Mourinho see which troubled Barcelona? It was physical play. Due to their average short heights and a lot of passing movements, it was seen that Barcelona are not used to playing very physical games.
Mourinho told his players ‘the perfect plan.’ The plan was to barge into any Barcelona who had the ball in the midfield. Even though Barcelona would win free kicks, there is no doubt that the Catalan Giants would find it hard to score on a free kick against
Real Madrid.
This plan eventually failed when a lot of Barcelona players started to dive and won free kicks even when the Real Madrid stars were not at fault.
This was the perfect plan made by Josep Guardiola. He was frustrating Madrid’s players so that they keep playing their “rash” game. That is exactly what happened and Pepe was red carded in the Champions League fixture against Madrid.
Even though the Portuguese was not at fault, since the game was very physical, the referee thought that it was appropriate to give marching orders to the Portuguese defender.
After so many losses against Barcelona, Mourinho should now realize what Barcelona’s real weakness is. He should play exactly as he played with them while he was in charge of the Italian club Inter Milan.
